Rear Adm. Scott Robertson, commander, Carrier Strike Group Two, spoke at the ceremony and presented Jones with the Legion of Merit for his time at DESRON 22. Jones departs after serving as commodore since October 2020. Previously, he reported as deputy commodore in September 2019.
 
“It has been a profound honor and privilege leading DESRON 22,” Jones said. “The trials and tribulations we have endured, the high standards we have set, and the uncharted waters we faced during a global pandemic, were all incredibly important.

 
We showcased to the world that despite any challenge we face, the U.S. Navy is ready and able to ensure peace and stability wherever tasked.”
 
Jones previous sea tours include the Forrestal-class aircraft carrier USS Independence (CV 62), the Spruance-class destroyer USS Stump (DD 978), and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 75). Jones later served as executive officer and commanding officer of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75).

Then reported to DESRON 22 as the squadron’s deputy commodore in October 2020. He clearly stated his goals and priorities as he takes the helm.
 
“As we start this new chapter, we will have the continued challenges that come with ships in the yards and at different operational stages,” Then said. “We must do our part so that our ships and Sailors succeed. We will perform the mission and our jobs at the highest level we can.”
 
DESRON 22 consists of guided-missile destroyers, including Mitscher, USS Laboon (DDG 58), USS Ramage (DDG 61), and USS Mahan (DDG 72). Established in March 1943, DESRON 22 is one of the oldest destroyer squadrons in the U.S. Navy.
