The Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit in Cherry Point welcomed their new commanding officer during a change of command event June 26.

Lt. Col. David Donnell assumed command of the unit from Lt. Col. Tegan Owen, who had been the commanding officer since July 2018. Donnell, an Elkhart, Indiana native, previously served as the assistant program manager for logistics and the readiness cell lead for the V-22 Joint Program Office (PMA-275) at Naval Air Systems Command at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland.

CNATT Commanding Officer Capt. Bryant Hepstall was unable to attend the event due to the existing COVID-19 travel restrictions. Hepstall offered reflection and foresight on CNATTU Cherry Point’s leadership, past and present.

“I really appreciate the strong foundation Lt. Col. Owen and the leadership team in CNATTU Cherry Point built during her tenure there,” Hepstall said. “I’m excited to work with Lt. Col. Donnell, and fully expect him to take CNATTU Cherry Point to the next level!”

CNATTU Cherry Point’s mission, which includes the detachment in Little Rock, Arkansas, is to provide aviation maintenance specialized training to operate and maintain weapon systems and sub-systems supporting organizational and intermediate level maintenance AV-8B Harrier and C/KC-130J Hercules communities, and more. Donnell expressed his eagerness to lead the unit to mission success.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead CNATTU Cherry Point and Detachment Little Rock,” Donnell said. “I will work hard to ensure our staff have the resources needed to execute the mission.”

CNATT’s mission is to develop, deliver and support aviation training necessary to meet validated Fleet requirements. Its mission aligns perfectly with MyNavy HR Pillar 1, Force Development, ensuring Sailors and Marines are equipped with the specific skills they need to do their jobs and having access to career enhancement opportunities.

CNATT also is a technical training agent for the Naval Aviation Enterprise, an organization designed to sustain required current readiness and advance future warfighting capabilities at best possible cost.
