Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Materiel Readiness Dr. Vic Ramdass Visits SWRMC

19 July 2021
The Honorable Dr. Vic Ramdass, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for Materiel Readiness (MR), visited Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) on July 12.

Ramdass, who was appointed DASD (MR) in March 2021, was accompanied by Mr. Jeffrey Frankston, ODASD (MR) Director for Naval Readiness, and Ms. Geraldine Lee, Director, Maintenance and Modernization, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Ships, and discussed maintenance and modernization processes and procedures with SWRMC leadership and subject matter experts.

The purpose of the visit was to get a comprehensive picture of the current state of Navy maintenance capability on the waterfront, learning about infrastructure, skills, issues and other challenges the Intermediate-level maintenance community is experiencing and how this integrates with other levels of maintenance both public and private.

“We learned a lot during our visit,” said Ramdass. “I was very impressed with the knowledge and skills at SWRMC and I look forward to taking what we learned and sharing it with senior leadership.”

Ramdass’ visit included meeting with Capt. John Bauer, SWRMC’s Commanding Officer, and Craig Cunningham, SWRMC’s Production Department Head, who accompanied the group on a tour of the Production shops. The tour primarily focused on Emergency Breathing Air Compressor, Alidades, Diesel LPD / LSD Cylinder Head Assembly, and Binoculars.

“It was an honor to meet Dr. Ramdass, Mr. Frankston, and Ms. Lee and share with them maintenance and modernization best practices,” said Bauer. “The continued partnership highlights the efforts being made to address materiel readiness issues here on the waterfront and supports senior leadership goals to improve maintenance availabilities.”

The group also covered a variety of topics including what innovative technology or techniques are in use at SWRMC that can be shared across the Navy and Department of Defense.

SWRMC is meeting its mission to provide superior ship maintenance, modernization, technical support, and training for the Pacific Fleet.
