7 Things You Need to Remember about Transferring your Education Benefits

The Post-9/11 GI Bill is an exceptional benefit provided by the U.S. government to Sailors for their military service. Individuals can choose to use it for their own education, or transfer their eligibility to family members.

Here are seven things you need to remember about transferring your education benefits (TEB):

1. You have to have served at least six years in the Armed forces and agree to serve four additional years Active Duty or SELRES.

2. Your four years of service obligation begins when your TEB status on milConnect states "Request approved."

3. Do not assume your request was approved, log in to milConnect and verify your status.

4. Eligible family members must be listed in DEERS, and election of family members must be made / approved while a servicemember's status is either Active Duty or Selected Reserve (SELRES). The member must remain on Active Duty or SELRES until their obligation end date.

5. As soon as you are eligible and have a family member listed in DEERS, transfer at least one benefit month to your family members, which will signal intent to give them your benefit.

6. The TEB benefit is valued at approximately $80,000 (this includes payments for tuition, fees, books and supplies, and a monthly housing allowance).

7. Do not wait until you are ready to retire to transfer TEB benefits.
