Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Dakota Flint, assigned to Helicopter Maritime Squadron (HSM) 35 embarked aboard the littoral combat ship USS Fort Worth (LCS 3), performs a pre-flight check on an MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned helicopter aboard the littoral combat ship USS Freedom (LCS 1) during an Independent Deployer Certification Exercise (IDCERTEX). IDCERTEX, led by Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet (C3F) and executed by Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 15, is being conducted Feb. 9-20 off the Coast of Southern California and Hawaii. The exercise includes Crew 102, embarked aboard Freedom, the guided-missile destroyers USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), USS Chosin (CG 65) and the guided-missile destroyers USS Preble (DDG 88) and USS Chafee (DDG 90). IDCERTEX will serve as CSG 15's final opportunity to evaluate and certify Preble, Chafee and Crew 102 across multiple warfare areas prior to regularly scheduled deployments.   • Sailors embarked aboard the Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) perform surgery on a patient in an operating room aboard the ship. Comfort is underway operating in the vicinity of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Department of Defense is supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the lead federal agency, in helping those affected by Hurricane Maria to minimize suffering and is one component of the overall whole-of-government response effort.   • Sailors aboard the Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) say a prayer for Sara Victoria Llull Rodriguiz, the first child born aboard Comfort in more than seven years. Comfort is underway operating in the vicinity of San Juan, Puerto Rico, to provide medical services with additional visits being planned around the island. The U.S. Health and Human Services and Puerto Rico Department of Health representatives are prioritizing patients at each stop prior to Comfort's arrival. Howard is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations conducting maritime security operations to reassure allies and partners, preserving freedom of navigation and maintaining the free flow of commerce.
