The air station exercised local sheltering procedures during HURREX/Citadel Gale, the annual exercise that helps commands prepare for the Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30.

(Aug. 14, 2007) - Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West Rescue Swimmer, Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 2nd Class Kyle Messmer returns to the hangar following the rescue of two kayakers in distress in the waters off Key West. Messmer and three other NAS Key West Sailors were conducting search-pattern training in a Navy SH-60S Seahawk helicopter approximately 40 miles northwest of Key West when they spotted the kayakers. KEY WEST, Fla. (April 28, 2007) - An employee of The Nature Conservancy uses a drip torch filled with gasoline and diesel fuel to set fires along the runways of Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West. Working in cooperation with the State of Florida and The Nature Conservancy, NAS Key West's Environmental Department conducted prescribed burns to gauge the effectiveness of prescribed fires for maintaining vegetative growth in areas around runways, reducing invasive and exotic vegetation, and improving forage and cover habitats for the Lower Keys Marsh Rabbit.
