Captain Gregory L. Hicks

Capt. Greg Hicks was born in San Francisco and raised in Eugene, Oregon. Following commissioning in 1990 through the Navy ROTC program at Oregon State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Technical Journalism, Hicks reported to Navy Flight Officer School in Pensacola, Florida. Following 18 months of fixed-wing and rotary-wing flight training, Hicks earned his Wings of Gold as a naval aviator in 1993. Hicks is also a graduate of National War College, Fort McNair, D.C., where he earned a master’s degree in national security strategy in 2009.

Hicks then reported to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light, Squadron (HSL) 41 for fleet training in the SH-60B Sea Hawk helicopter and, in 1994, transferred to the “Warlords” of HSL-51 in Atsugi, Japan, as a replacement pilot.

Hicks became a public affairs officer (PAO) in 1996 and has served in a variety of shore and sea billets. His first PAO assignment was to the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center, Fallon, Nevada, from 1996-98. Follow on assignments include PAO aboard USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) from 1998-2000; PAO at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, from 2000-2002; director of public affairs at the Navy Office of Information, East in New York, from 2002-2004; a press desk officer for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs from 2004-2008; PAO for the commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet from 2009-2011; deputy chief of information for the Navy’s Office of Information in Washington, D.C., from 2012 to mid-2013; and director of communication and engagement, U.S. European Command from 2013-2015.

Before reporting as the acting chief of Navy information, Hicks served as the special assistant for public affairs to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for both the 18th and 19th chairman.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal and other personal and unit awards.

Hicks is married and has three children.
