Rear Adm. Jones is special assistant to Commander Naval Surface Forces. He most recently served as commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Seven, and commander, Amphibious Forces 7th Fleet and Task Force 76.
A surface warfare officer, Jones has deployed across the globe in minesweepers, frigates, destroyers, and helicopter carriers. In his most recent fleet assignment, he commanded Expeditionary Strike Group Seven. His earlier service includes command of USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), USS Hawes (FFG 53), USS Guardian (MCM 5) and USS Devastator (MCM 6) where he deployed to 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet theaters and earned five Battle Efficiency "E" awards.
Ashore, Jones has also served in joint and combined tours as a flag officer; he was the senior naval advisor to the Head of the Iraqi Navy and the director Combined Multinational Naval Training Force - Iraq from 2009 to 2010. His earlier assignments involved requirements, programs, and force structure assessments as well as engineering related positions both overseas and on Navy and joint staffs. He served as executive assistant to the Commander, United States Fleet Forces from 2005 to 2007 and commanded the Surface Warfare Officer School from 2007-2009.
Jones hails from Florida where he enlisted in the Navy in 1974. He is a 1981 graduate of Florida State University and a 1996 graduate of the U.S. Naval War College. He was awarded a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and a Bachelor of Science in International Affairs. He is the recipient of the 2001 Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Award for inspirational leadership.
Jones' personal awards include the Legion of Merit (Four Awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (Two Awards), Meritorious Service Medal (Two Awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Two Awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Two Awards), and other service medals and ribbons.
