A native of Greenville, Ala., Vice Adm. (ret) Crenshaw graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering. He earned his Naval Flight Officer wings in Pensacola, Fla. in December 1975 and completed initial training as an A-6 Intruder Bombardier-Navigator (B/N) in Attack Squadron Forty-Two. Throughout his career as an Intruder B/N, Vice Adm. Crenshaw served in Attack Squadrons Sixty-Five, Thirty-Four, and Eighty-Five, flying combat sorties during Operation Eldorado Canyon (Libya 1986) and Operation Desert Storm (Iraq 1991). Vice Adm. Crenshaw served as operations officer on the staff of Commander, Carrier Air Wing One as well as serving at sea on the staff of Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group Eight. He has served as Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron Eighty-Five and as Commander, Carrier Air Wing One. During his career Vice Adm. Crenshaw has deployed on the aircraft carriers USS Independence (CV 62), USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67), and USS America (CV 66). Vice Adm. Crenshaw's assignments ashore include the United States Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) in Patuxent River, Md., where he received the Navy League's Most Outstanding Student Award for Class 77. He subsequently served at the Systems Engineering Directorate of the Naval Air Test Center and as an instructor at USNTPS. Additional shore assignments included tours on the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate of the Joint Staff in Washington, D.C.; Executive Assistant to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; and Executive Assistant and Naval Aide to the Secretary of the Navy. Selected for flag rank in July 1998, Vice Adm. Crenshaw's first flag assignment was as Deputy Director, Assessments Division (N81D) in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He assumed command of Commander, Carrier Group Six/Commander, John F. Kennedy Battle Group in May 2000. He also assumed additional duties as Deputy Commander Joint Task Force-Southwest Asia from February to May 2001. In June 2001, Vice Adm. Crenshaw assumed duties as Director, Assessments Division (N81) in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He also served as Commander Navy Region Europe from June 2003 to April 2004 and Deputy Commander U.S. Naval Forces Europe from June 2003 to June 2004. For his final assignment, Crenshaw assumed the duties as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Resources, Requirements and Assessments (N8) in November 2004. Vice Adm. Crenshaw's awards include the Legion of Merit (1 Silver Star), the Distinguished Flying Cross (Combat "V"), the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (Oak Leaf Cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal (1 Gold Star), Individual Air Medal (4 Gold Stars and Combat V), Strike Flight Air Medal (Numeral 2), the Navy Commendation Medal (3 Gold Stars and Combat "V"), various campaign and service medals and the SSBN Deterrent Patrol Pin.
