Rear Adm. Steve Parode is the director of Intelligence, U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. He is the senior intelligence officer and principal intelligence advisor to the USSTRATCOM commander.
Parode, a native of Washington, D.C., was commissioned in 1986 from the NROTC unit at the University of California, Los Angeles. He attended Basic Cryptologic Officer Training and then proceeded to Naval Security Group Activity San Vito dei Normanni, Italy for duties as a cryptologist.
Prior to his assignment at USSTRATCOM, Parode most recently served as senior CNO Fellow for the CNO’s 33rd Strategic Studies group.
His sea duty assignments included: Intelligence Department head and main battery targeting officer on USS Wisconsin (BB 64) during Operation Desert Storm where he also qualified as a surface warfare officer; two special submarine mission deployments; Cryptologic Resource coordinator and force protection officer for COMCRUDESGRU 8/USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Strike Group; and Staff Cryptologist and Information Operations (IO) director for COMSIXTHFLT, where he was Fleet Battle Watch captain during Operation Iraqi Freedom I and the J2C and J39 for JTF Aztec Silence under USSOCEUR.
Ashore, in addition to a series of assignments in Signals Intelligence, while assigned to Naval Security Group Command, he led the IO Division and served on the Network Red Team for Exercise Millennium Challenge. He commanded Navy Information Operations Command, Sugar Grove, West Virginia and became the first Field Station commander of NSA’s Sugar Grove Research Station. As commanding officer of Navy Cyber Warfare Development Group, he also served as commander, Task Force 1090 under U. S. 10th Fleet.
His major staff tours were in OPNAV N3/5 as the deputy director for IO and at OUSD(I), where he validated IO/Cyber requirements, served as program manager for special program capability development and guided policy implementation for intelligence support to IO. He qualified as an information dominance warfare officer in December 2010.
Parode earned a B.A. from UCLA and an M.A. from Georgetown University; is a Naval War College Distinguished Graduate; and has completed DAWIA Level 3 Program Management qualifications. He is married to the former Nancy Hertel of Pasadena, California; they are proud parents of a son, Alexander, and a daughter, Martine.
