Rear Admiral John Haley assumed duties as the director of Global Operations, U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, in March 2013. He is responsible to the commander on matters of situational awareness, command and control, integrated plans, and global nuclear, cyber, and space operations.
Haley graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Physics in May 1980 and was designated a naval flight officer in 1981. After training as a bombardier/navigator in the A-6E Intruder with Attack Squadron (VA) 128, he was assigned to VA-52 aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 15. Returning to VA-128 as an instructor in February 1986, Haley went on to serve with the Medium Attack Weapons School, Pacific, when the school was commissioned in June 1986.
Selected for pilot training, Haley reported to Training Squadron (VT) 27 in October 1987 and following advanced jet training, earned his designation as a naval aviator January 1989. He was assigned to VA-145 from October 1989 until December 1992 aboard USS Ranger (CV 61) with CVW-2. It was at this time he flew combat missions during Operation Desert Storm. In January 1993, he reported to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Inspector General (IG) as executive assistant to the deputy IG. Transitioning to the EA-6B Prowler, Haley reported to the Gauntlets of Electronic Attack Squadron 136 aboard USS Independence (CV 62) serving as executive and commanding officer March 1995 to October 1997. After nuclear training, he served as the executive officer of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), from December 1999 until June 2001.
Haley reported to Commander, U.S. Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet, serving as the assistant chief of staff for Readiness and Requirements until January 2002 then commanded USS LaSalle (AGF-3) the 6th Fleet flagship until January 2004. After serving as chief of staff to Commander, U. S. Naval Air Force Atlantic Fleet he commanded USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) from June 2005 until January 2008. Haley was then assigned as deputy chief of staff to Commander, U.S. Pacific Command until July 2008 when he reported as commanding officer of USS George Washington (CVN 73). From April 2009 until March 2011, Haley served as director, Operations and Plans for the chief of naval operations. In April 2011, he assumed command of Battle Force 7th Fleet/Task Force 70/Carrier Strike Group 5 permanently embarked on board USS George Washington (CVN 73) homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, until January 2013.
Haley has 3,500 flight hours and over 1,100 carrier landings. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (3 Individual & 6 Strike/Flight), and other campaign and unit awards.
