Rear Admiral Marshall E. Cusic, Jr.

Rear Admiral Marshall E. Cusic, Jr., Medical Corps U.S. Naval Reserve, is a native of Fort Smith, Ark. After graduation from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., in 1965, he attended the Medical College of Wisconsin from which he received his M.D. degree in 1969.

His medical internship (1970), pediatric residency (1971, 1976) and fellowship training in allergy-immunology (1978) were completed at Milwaukee County General Hospital, Ohio State University School of Medicine Hospitals, and the Medical College of Wisconsin Institutions.

Rear Adm. Cusic was commissioned an Ensign in 1966 and served on active duty as a pediatrician at Naval Hospital Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico (1971-1975). Upon discharge he served as Executive Officer, Naval Reserve 3rd Marine Division medial unit, Milwaukee (1975-1978). Recalled to active duty, he served as staff Allergist-Immunologist at Naval Regional Medical Center, San Diego (1978-1981).

His assignments include Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of NR MEDCRU 1013, Madison, Wisc., (1981-1983); Staff Allergist-Immunologist, Individual Ready Reserve (1983-1989); and Naval Reserve Fleet Hospital 500 Combat Zone 23. While with NRFH 23, he served as Director of Medical Services (1993-1997), Team Leader for Medical Readiness Training Exercises to Costa Rica (1992) and Indonesia (1993), and as Officer in Charge of Fleet Hospital Support to Combined Arms Exercise, 29 Palms, Calif. (1997). He conducted a field research sabbatical on Dengue virus disease with Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Md., and Naval Medical Research Institute Infectious Disease Detachment, Lima, Peru (1998).

Rear Adm. Cusic commanded Naval Reserve Naval Hospital Great Lakes (1997-1998) and served as Executive Officer, Naval Reserve Fleet Hospital 500 Combat Zone 9 (1998-1999). He Commanded Naval Reserve Fleet Hospital Great Lakes (1999-2001), and served as Special Projects Officer Naval Reserve Bureau of Medicine and Surgery 106 (2001-2003). His Flag assignments include Deputy Surgeon, United States Pacific Fleet (2003-2006), Deputy Commander for Total Force Integration, Navy Medicine Support Command (2006-present) and Chief, Reserve Medical Corps, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (2005-present).

Rear Adm. Cusic wears the following personal awards: Legion of Merit, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Naval Commendation Medal, National Defense Services Medal (Third Award), Navy Recruiting Medal, Navy Overseas Service Medal (Two Awards), Global War on Terrorism Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with silver hourglass device and Expert Medal for rifle.

In civilian life, Rear Adm. Cusic practices allergy and immunology at the Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, Wisc., where he is a staff physician and Director. He is Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics (Allergy and Immunology) at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and a member of the American College of Physician Executives.
