Rear Admiral Mark W. Kenny


Rear Admiral Mark W. Kenny, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, graduated from the Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Security Affairs.

His initial sea tours included USS Sea Devil (SSN 664), USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul (SSN 708) and USS Kentucky (SSBN 737).

His shore assignments included duty at Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Naval Submarine Training Center, Pacific; Submarine Group 10 and Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Kenny served as commanding officer of USS Birmingham (SSN 695). During his tour the ship earned the Pacific Fleet Arleigh Burke Trophy as the most improved submarine in the Pacific Fleet and earned the squadron Battle Efficiency "E". While in command of Birmingham, Kenny was selected for the Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award.

Kenny served as commander of Submarine Squadron 7 in Pearl Harbor. During his tour, the squadron staff worked up and deployed to the Persiann Gulf in support of the Constellation Battle Group. He then served on the Navy staff as the branch head for Submarine Acquisition and SSBN/SSGN programs.

Kenny served as the executive assistant on the staff of the Joint Chiefs (J-8). Upon his selection to flag rank, he was assigned as the deputy director for Submarine Warfare (N87B) on the Navy Staff and flag officer for Task Force ASW.

Kenny assumed command of Commander, Submarine Group 2, Commander Navy Region Northeast in New London, Conn., and Commander Submarine Group 10 in Kings Bay Ga., in January 2005.

In March 2005, while in group command, Kenny founded the Center for Submarine Counter-terrorism (CT) Operations. In October 2006, he expanded CT operational support to the Surface and Aviation communities by forming the Center for Expeditionary Counter-terrorism Operations in Washington, Norfolk, and Groton, Conn. In July 2008 the Chief of Naval Operations stood up the Navy Irregular Warfare Office on the Navy Staff and designated Kenny as the first director.

Kenny completed the National Security and Strategic Studies Program from the Naval War College, is a Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI Fellow and has a Masters of Arts in International Relations from Salve Regina University.
