Sasebo, Japan, Apr. 25, 2002 — Escorted by the Japanese Coast Guard as it pulls out of Sasebo harbor to participate in the submarine rescue Exercise Pacific Reach 2002, the U.S. Navy attack submarine USS La Jolla (SSN 701) carries the deep submergence rescue vehicle Mystic (DSRV-1). La Jolla and Mystic will operate with surface ships and submarines from the U.S., Japan, Australia, the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Singapore during Exercise Pacific Reach. Mystic was specifically designed to fill the need for an improved means of rescuing the crew of a submarine immobilized on the ocean floor. The Suez Canal, Mar. 4, 2002 — The Los Angeles-class attack submarine, USS Boise (SSN 764) leads the fast combat support ship USS Seattle (AOE 3) and the guided missile cruiser USS Hue City (CG 66) as the ships of USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) Battle Group transit the Suez Canal. The Kennedy battle group will rendezvous with USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) to relieve "TR" in supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. The Pacific Ocean, July 24, 2001 — The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Chicago (SSN 721) glides along at periscope depth in the western Pacific Ocean off the coast of Malaysia. Chicago is participating in a war-a-sea exercise as part of the seventh annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2001 exercise. Changi Naval Base, Singapore, July 3, 2001 — USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) is pier-side on Changi Naval Base during the seventh annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2001 exercise. CARAT is a series of exercises which take place throughout the western Pacific each summer to increase regional cooperation and promote interoperability between participating countries. Apra Harbor, Guam, Apr. 13, 2001 — The converted ballistic missile submarine USS Kamehameha (SSN 642) glides past Orote Point through Apra Harbor, Guam, on its way to a brief port visit. Kamehameha was commissioned as the 30th Benjamin Franklin-class ballastic missile submarine in December 1965, then converted to a conventional submarine in July 1992.
