- New Chief. Washington D.C. Oct. 27, 1998 Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton becomes the Navy's newest Master Chief Petty Officer. The honorary title was awarded to Mr. Dalton today during his meeting with Master Chiefs taking part in the Chief of Naval Operations/Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy's Senior Enlisted Leadership Forum. Following the pinning on of his collar devices Secretary Dalton was presented with the bronze statue "The Chief". Hi-Rez.
- International Training. Guayaquil, Equador, Sept. 12, 1998 Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton visits with the crew and embarked SEAL squad aboard the Coastal Patrol Craft USS Tempest (PC2). Tempest is currently training with the Ecuadorian Navy and Coast Guard on a variety of maritime skills. Hi-Rez.
- SECNAV Arriving. The Arabian Gulf, Aug. 20, 1998 Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton looks down on the San Diego-based USS Jarrett (FFG 33) moments before he landed aboard the frigate Aug. 20, 1998, to meet the crew and thank them for their outstanding support of the deployed Essex Amphibious Readiness group and the Abraham Lincoln battle group. - "People are the Navy's greatest asset." Pensacola, Fla., Aug. 14, 1998 Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton tells the staff and students of the Navy Aviation Technical Training Center that "people are the Navy's greatest asset" during his visit with the 2500 Sailors and Marines of the command. Secretary Dalton also visited the Navy recruiting school, met with the staff of Naval Education and Training Command, and will take part in the commissioning of Bonhomme Richard tomorrow at the Naval Station.

- SecNav resigns. Washington, D.C., June 8, 1998. Secretary Dalton, joined by his wife Margaret, announced today his intention to leave office in December. He made the announcement at a Department of Defense press brief where Secretary Cohen said, "John Dalton has done a tremendous job as Secretary of the Navy, and he will be missed. Secretary Dalton will have served as the leader of the Navy Department for five and a half years when he leaves office this winter. Hi-Rez

- Missouri to museum. Secretary Dalton signs the USS Missouri (BB 63) Donation Agreement May 4, 1998, that will send the famed battleship to Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The "Mighty Mo" will be used as a museum, and docked near the Battleship Arizona Memorial.
- Former president honored. April 27, 1998, Secretary Dalton presents former President Jimmy Carter with a model of the Seawolf class submarine to be named in his honor. The Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) is the third and final submarine of the Seawolf class. President Carter, a 1946 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is the only president to ever qualify in submarines. He has distinguished himself by a lifetime of public service, and has long ties to the Navy submarine force.

- Harvard remarks. Boston, April 21, 1998 Secretary Dalton addresses students and faculty members of the Harvard Business School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government on the subject of leadership and ethics. Secretary Dalton was the keynote speaker at the second annual Harvard Graduate School debate competition between the two prestigious schools. [Text of remarks]
- National Youth Leadership Forum. Washington D.C., Feb. 11, 1998 Secretary Dalton addresses nearly 450 high school students from around the country during his keynote speech at the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy. The Secretary spoke on the current status of the Department of the Navy, educational opportunities and challenging careers offered to Sailors and Marines in both the officer and enlisted fields.
