Acting SECNAV Announces FY08 Environmental Award Winners

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Acting Secretary of the Navy announced March 26 the winners of the Department of the Navy's Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 Environmental Awards.

The annual Secretary of the Navy Environmental Awards program recognizes Navy and Marine Corps individuals, teams, ships and installations for exceptional environmental stewardship. The major FY 2008 competition categories included cultural resources management, environmental quality, natural resources conservation, environmental restoration and pollution prevention.

The 17 winners, listed by category, are:

Cultural Resources Management Installation Award:
- Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan
- Marine Corps Recruiting Depot Parris Island

Cultural Resources Management Individual or Team Award:
- Cultural Resources Team of Navy Region Hawaii
- Marine Corps Recruiting Depot Parris Island

Environmental Quality Small Ship Award:
- USNS Bridge (T-AOE 10)

Environmental Quality Industrial Installation Award:
- Fleet Readiness Center East
- Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point

Environmental Quality Overseas Installation Award:
- Naval Support Activity Bahrain
- Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan

Environmental Restoration Installation Award:
- Naval Base Ventura County
- Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point

Natural Resources Conservation Large Installation Award:
- Naval Base Coronado
- Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune

Pollution Prevention Non-industrial Installation Award:
- Naval Air Station Whidbey Island
- Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

Pollution Prevention Individual or Team Award:
- Pollution Prevention Team of Fleet Readiness Center Southeast
- Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command Twenty-Nine Palms

In ALNAV 021/09, recently released to announce the winners, Acting Secretary of the Navy BJ Penn extended his congratulations to the winners while praising all of the nominees for successfully "sustaining the environmental while protecting our freedom."

"Once again, the quality of nominees was particularly high this year," added Donald R. Schregardus, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for the environment.

"Each of the nominees should be justifiably proud of their accomplishments."

The winners will be honored at the SECNAV Environmental Awards ceremony May 28 at the Naval Heritage Center of the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.

With the exception of the small ship category winner, which has no equivalent at the Secretary of Defense level, all eligible winners are currently competing in the FY08 Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards competition.
