WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen will continue his "ongoing conversation" with Sailors, their families and the American public by producing regular podcasts.
Available for download on the Navy's flagship website, www.navy.mil, as well as by subscription through most podcasting software, the podcasts will serve as a means for the CNO to communicate directly on a wide variety of issues.
Mullen -- an iPod owner himself -- appreciates the convenience of the technology and wants to use it to talk about things in a more informal and frequent basis, according to Mullen spokesman MCCS (SW) Dave Rea.
The podcasts will vary in format.
"This first one takes the form of an interview," said Rea, "but we expect the podcasts to also include speeches and commentary as well. We want to be flexible and not get married to any particular format."
Rea said the CNO plans to record his podcasts weekly, schedule permitting.
"The great thing about this technology is that it doesn't really require a lot of time or resources," Rea said. "All you need is the ability to record the audio at a high enough quality and the software to share it. It gives all of us -- including families and the public at large -- the opportunity to stay better connected to leadership and to hear firsthand about the things affecting us."
Mullen's first podcast will be available June 4 on the Navy's home page at www.navy.mil.
The conversation discusses his recent travels to visit Sailors in Hawaii and Pensacola, as well as partnership-building trips to Pakistan, India, Turkey and Greece. Mullen also talks about the Navy's expanding missions in the war on terror -- including the recent naval exercise in the Arabian Gulf -- and the ongoing requirement for individual augmentees.
