Norfolk, VA (NNS) -- The NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Norfolk Fuel Department was named runner-up for the 2012 American Petroleum Institute (API) Award in an announcement April 22.
It is the fifth consecutive year they have either won the award or have been the runner-up.
Rear Adm. Mark Heinrich, Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command and Chief of the Supply Corps, announced the winners and runners-up April 22 for the 2012 API awards for excellence in fuels management and to the Navy fuels mission. These annual awards are promoted by the API, an internationally known petroleum trade organization that recognizes activities and personnel that have made the most significant contributions to the Department of the Navy bulk fuel operations, petroleum supply chain management, and fleet fuel support.
These awards highlight the accomplishments of countless Department of the Navy petroleum professionals who daily demonstrate their pride, professionalism and support for our warfighters.
During 2012, the NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Fuel Department successfully handled over 725 million gallons of fuel while conducting over 4100 operations for their customers. During the past two years the Fuel Department has handled over 1.4 billion gallons of fuel. The NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Fuel Department supported this high operational tempo with zero missed fueling operations, zero demurrage charges, zero notices of violation, and zero spills caused by operator negligence.
In addition to fuel operations, during this same period the Fuel Department provided valuable training to U. S. Navy Officers, NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Officers, U. S. Air Force fuels personnel, Army officers, and new NAVSUP Energy and DLA Energy employees.
The Fuel Department combines superior customer service, proactive environmental stewardship, and an aggressive Sustainment, Restoration and Modernization (S/RM) program to maintain professional fuel terminal management that is top notch and second-to-none. This performance marks the NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Fuel Department as truly the finest fuel operation in the Navy.
The NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Fuel Department has done a consistently outstanding job supporting their customers and accomplishing their mission. The NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Fuel Department is the highest volume fuel operation in the Department of Defense. During fiscal year 2010, the NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Fuel Department handled over 18 million barrels of fuel and over 15 million barrels of fuel during fiscal year 2011. This equates to more than 1.3 billion gallons of fuel handled over a twenty four month period.
