YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka's Joint Personal Property Shipping Office (JPPSO) held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony April 22 in recognition of its added capability in supporting the joint warfighter as well as physical relocation to building 1848 onboard Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka.
By creating this new capacity NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka is aligning itself with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (OSD) initiative to consolidate 151 personal property offices to 17 worldwide, said Capt. Marty Fields, NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka Commanding Officer, adding that this Department of Defense (DOD) level effort is aimed at reducing administrative and facility costs throughout the services while continuing to meet all customer requirements.
"We were chosen by the services to operate as the single Joint Personal Property Shipping Office within mainland Japan and Okinawa," said Fields. "Setting up this new facility has been a long time coming and is a very important step in the overall consolidation efforts that are scheduled to be completed during fiscal year 2016."
The OSD has encouraged this regionalization of Personal Property Shipping Office's (PPSO) with the goal of gaining logistics efficiencies and reducing redundancies, which would improve customer support overall.
By separating the front office functions from the back office functions you strengthen both the face-to-the-customer and the face-to- the-industry, Fields added.
"Each storefront operation will remain at the individual installations to provide outbound customer counseling and services," said John Hilaman, NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka PPSO Traffic Manager.
However, it is the JPPSO that will be responsible for all the back office functions related to inbound storage management, shipment management and vendor management, Hilaman said.
"This regionalization is taking place world-wide, here in Japan we have the lead, in Korea it will be the Army," said Hilaman.
"Basically, within four years time, you will see the men and women of NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka, who do the manning of the JPPSO billets here in Yokosuka, taking on that joint responsibility of ensuring not only Navy but Marine Corps, Army and Air Force personnel and their family members are taken care of," said John Hornbrook, NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka Regional Services (Code 400) Director. "This is a job we know how to do and a job that we perform quite well on a daily basis, which is why we are excited take on this new challenge."
Delivering superior customer service is the benchmark, added Hornbrook.
"It doesn't matter if you are wearing a blue, green or kaki uniform or whether you are a civilian or family member wearing jeans and flip flops, the service you will get here in Japan will be second to none," said Hornbrook.
