WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Statement from Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus regarding the passing of Admiral Kelso:
"The Nation and the Navy mourn the loss of Admiral Frank Kelso, who passed away in Norfolk over the weekend. In a career spanning 38 years he served in positions of responsibility from commander of two submarines to Supreme Allied Commander of NATO and finally as Chief of Naval Operations.
"As Commander, Sixth Fleet he led the capture of the terrorists from the hijacking of the Achille Lauro and strikes against terrorist support facilities in Libya in the 1980's. As CNO he led our Navy through the Gulf War and the uncharted early days of the post-Cold War era with skill and dedication. He also faced the challenges of Tailhook, and helped return the Navy's core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment to the service.
"Admiral Kelso was a submariner, an accomplished commander, and an unmatched leader known for his intelligence and integrity. The thoughts of the 900,000 Sailors, Marines and civilians who make up the Department of the Navy go out to our fallen shipmate and his family. Semper Fortis."

Statement from Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert Regarding the passing of Admiral Kelso:
"Adm. Frank Kelso's bold leadership and innovative thinking guided the Navy through times of war and significant draw-down at the end of the Cold War. The ability to cut against the grain and find new and creative solutions for the Navy are what set Admiral Kelso apart from his peers. It was his strength of character and sure-fire integrity that ensured his success as a former CNO and to a higher degree solidified the formidable legacy of a great life that Admiral Frank Kelso leaves behind. It was an honor to have served with him and we are a better Navy due to his leadership and faithful commitment to our Sailors, Civilians and their Families."
