NEW YORK (NNS) -- USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) celebrated the start of Fleet Week New York 2017 by welcoming hundreds of guests on board for a reception in the ship's hangar bay May 24.

The event, hosted by Adm. Phil Davidson, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, featured Deputy Mayor of New York City's Strategic Policy Initiatives Richard Buery, Rear Adm. Louis Cariello, director, Energy and Environmental Readiness Division; and Lt. Gen. John Wissler, commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, as guest speakers.

"Thank you to Capt. Larry Getz and the entire crew of USS Kearsarge," said Davidson. "They were up this morning to pull into this port, get moored, set up this whole rig and entertain us here tonight. It's a herculean effort and the ship looks great. We're so grateful to be here."

Buery extended his and Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio's gratitude to all the Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who were in attendance and in the city.

"It is an honor to be aboard the majestic USS Kearsarge as we kick off 2017 Fleet Week," said Buery. "We're so proud to welcome the nearly 3,700 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and women arriving on the ships in our city. We are honored to have the opportunity to celebrate you and we hope you have a wonderful time in New York City."

Although the mayor could not attend, he sent his best wishes and thanked all those at the reception in a letter read by Buery.

"Dear friends, for the past 29 years Fleet Week has set aside time for all of us to recognize and pay tribute to the dedicated men and women of the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps and the United States Coast Guard who selflessly answer the call to serve and protect our nation at home and abroad," said de Blasio. "On behalf of the city of New York I offer my best wishes for a wonderful reception and continued success."

Capt. Larry G. Getz, Kearsarge's commanding officer, was grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the week's events.

"It is a distinct honor and privilege to have all of you on this ship," said Getz. "Thank you for inviting us to New York and plugging us in to a wonderful city."

After the formalities, guests were treated to food and beverages provided by Kearsarge's supply department and socialized with the crew.

The theme for this year's Fleet Week New York 2017 is "Celebrating the Sea Services and Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Seabees."
