JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Personnel from Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Jacksonville and Mayport worked jointly to support a school supply donation drive and orientation carnival during early August.
The school supply drive is organized annually by the NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville Wardroom and provides much needed supplies to over 400 students and teachers at the command's partner school, Hyde Grove Early Learning Center. This year's drive resulted in over 220 donated items.
Items donated included commonly needed items such as backpacks, pencils, crayons, cleaning wipes, and composition books. The items were delivered to Hyde Grove's faculty and staff at their annual orientation carnival. The carnival was an excellent opportunity for command volunteers to assist students, parents, and teachers as they kick off the 2017-2018 school year.
Hyde Grove Principal, AuGena Sapp, was overjoyed and thankful for the donations and volunteer efforts from the command. "Thank you so much for the support," said Sapp, as she spoke with NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville's Commanding Officer, Capt. Matt Ott.
In addition to donating school supplies, NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville continues to lead the charge with outstanding service to the community. Their volunteerism includes mentoring, reading books, and additional support at planned events and projects as part of a partnership between Naval Air Station Jacksonville's School Liaison Program and local schools in the Jacksonville area.
"I think it's important to provide positivity to these children at an early age. These kids are our future. Today their tools are pencils, crayons, and wide ruled paper. Tomorrow they will be leaders in industry, government, and education" said Lt. Mario Brooks, Fuel Intern at NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville who spearheaded the donation drive. "I'm just happy we were able to support their needs."
NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville, one of eight fleet logistics centers under NAVSUP Global Logistics Support (GLS), provides operational logistics, business and support services to fleet, shore and industrial commands of the Navy, Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, and other joint and allied forces.
