SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- Fleet Activities Sasebo has a new second-in-command.

Cmdr. Bernie Wang has taken on the job as Chief Staff Officer (CSO) as of March 5, replacing Cmdr. Carol Shivers, who has moved on to Naval Technical Training Center, Meridian, Miss.

Wang said he wants to focus on continuing to make Sasebo a quality military installation.

"One of the most important issues is to continue to make this one of the best bases, if not the best base in the world for the Navy," Wang said.

He added that he understands his job here is very important.

"The CSO is pretty much the glue that binds the departments and everything together. It is important to be the voice of everyone, to hear their opinions and expertise, and pass that information up to the captain," Wang said. "I know how to listen and make sure that happens."

Another role is to serve the community and pass that spirit on to everyone else.

He added that he will ensure Sailors know their responsibilities to the host nation, respect the local laws and community, and foster a good working relationship with local citizens. He praised the local community for its support of the base.

"They have done so many things to help us grow as a community, and we, in turn, will work very closely with them to make sure we reciprocate their good will towards us. We, as good will ambassadors, will continue to work closely with them to make sure we maintain a wonderful relationship," he said.
