USS HARRY S. TRUMAN, At Sea (NNS) -- April 7, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) was awarded the East Coast Battle Efficiency Award by Commander, Naval Air Forces, Atlantic Fleet, for the calendar year 2003.

USS Nimitz (CVN 68) received the award for the west coast.

"For USS Harry S. Truman and USS Nimitz, your selection as the 2003 Battle 'E' winners mark you as the 'best of the best' on your respective coast," said Vice Adm. Michael D. Malone, commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific Fleet, and Rear Adm. James M. Zortman, commander, Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet, in a joint congratulatory message to both aircraft carriers.

Truman Sailors were thrilled to receive the news from the ship's commanding officer, Capt. Michael R. Groothousen.

"Winning the Battle 'E' shows me that the people who make that decision have seen what the crew of HST (Harry S. Truman) has known all along--we are the best ship on the waterfront. We went out there and we gave 'em Hell." said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 1st Class (AW) Tony Rice, who works on the ship's flight deck.

Additionally, the ship made a clean sweep of all departmental awards, earning the Battle 'E' for Air, Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance, Combat Systems, Damage Control, Deck, Nuclear Engineering, Navigation, Medical, Operations, Supply and Weapons departments.

"I couldn't be prouder of the men and women of this great ship and air wing team. They put forth tremendous effort each and every day, and their work in 2003 helped liberate a nation. I'm thrilled that their efforts have been rewarded with the Battle 'E'," Groothousen said.

As Truman Sailors congratulate themselves on this latest accomplishment, the Truman/Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 team is already in the middle of training for their next deployment. Truman is currently at sea participating in Tailored Ship's Training Availability I, II and III, and the Final Evaluation Period before heading into the next phase of the ship's training cycle.
