USS HARRY S. TRUMAN, At Sea (NNS) -- Adm. William J. Fallon, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, presented the Battenberg Cup to USS Harry S. Truman (HST) (CVN 75) June 2.
The nearly century-old Battenberg Cup honors the best warships overall in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. The Truman/Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 Team earned the three-foot-tall engraved silver trophy for 2003 by earning the most awards in the Atlantic Fleet.
Fallon commended HST and CVW 3 crew members for their hard work and effort during Operation Iraqi Freedom as he presented the award to HST Commanding Officer Capt. Michael R. Groothousen.
"For your remarkable achievements in 2003, for performance during extended air combat ops, congratulations to every man and woman on the crew," said Fallon. "Keep up this performance."
The award came just hours before a scheduled underway period for HST and served as motivation for the crew.
"I think it's a great award because it makes me feel good to be a part of a great warship like this," said Yeoman 3rd Class Julius Chiles.
"We're very proud of this award," said Groothousen shortly after accepting the award. "But we are not going to rest on our laurels as we get ready to return to the global war on terrorism. We are ready to go out for Summer Pulse '04, where we will show the skill and ability of the Navy. We are proof of concept."
Summer Pulse '04 is the first exercise of the Navy's new Fleet Response Plan, which aims to increase fleet readiness throughout the Navy and improve the ability of the United States to respond appropriately in the event of a crisis.
For the year 2003, HST earned the Battle Efficiency Award, the Dorie P. Miller Award for food service, its fifth consecutive Ship's Store and Service Excellence Award and swept the departmental Battle E awards.
