Memphis, Tenn. (NNS) -- A set of orders to Millington, Tennessee? A three year tour, where?
To locate Millington on a map, look at the Southwest corner of Tennessee, find Memphis and go a half-inch straight North. You then realize there can't be any ships there. So what's on board Naval Support Activity Mid-South? And what career opportunities are there for military spouses?
Answering that last question is easy. Millington is home to 32 commands, including Navy Personnel Command, Navy Recruiting Command, Reserve Readiness Command Mid-South, a Naval Reserve Center, a Navy Legal Service Office, the Army Corps of Engineers Finance Center, a Branch Medical Clinic, Dental Clinic, and two dozen more potential sources of career opportunities for the family members of Sailors stationed here.
Within these tenant commands are almost 1,900 civilian appropriated and non-appropriated fund jobs. There are also nearly 400 contractor positions providing computer services and secretarial support to the government. Also on board the installation are more than 300 non-Department of Defense positions which maintain the buildings and grounds and operate franchise restaurants such as Subway, Taco Bell and McDonald's.
All this adds up to the NAVSUPPACT Mid-South base being one of Memphis' top employers. While many of the positions are filled by permanent or long-term residents of Western Tennessee, there is a reasonable rate of turnover to provide opportunities to family members new to the area.
When it comes to distribution of goods, Memphis is the king, topping the freight tonnage of Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Seattle, New York and everywhere else. And that means plenty of jobs at places like FedEx, the largest employer in Memphis, and commercial airlines, trucking companies and railroads.
The service and tourism industry also employs a large number largely due to the hotels and casinos of nearby Tunica, Mississippi. This "mini Las Vegas" offers the same names in hospitality, entertainment and casino action.
The United States Government, tied for second place with more than 14,000 employees, employs people at an Internal Revenue Service service center, a gamut of federal offices and courts in the downtown federal building, and with a large Department of Agriculture presence serving the cotton industry.
If you have been considering continuing your education NAVSUPPACT Mid-South is also home to Navy College, which hosts seven colleges and universities. Collectively, the schools offer courses of study, which can be completed in full on the base, in three associates degree programs, 10 bachelor programs and three masters programs. The University of Memphis, with its main campus in mid-town Memphis, offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Also within the Memphis metropolitan area are several fine private colleges, technical schools and health care teaching and research hospitals.
So if you've been worried you might end up walking down Lonely Street looking for opportunities in the Mid-South, you can stop singing the blues because there are plenty of chances for success for those who are looking for them.
