ARLINGTON, Va. (NNS) -- Navy Exchange (NEX) Quarters K gas station in Arlington, Va. opened its first Biodiesel gas pump Dec. 15.
Biodiesel is the newest alternative fuel to be offered at NEXCOM. In addition to the new biodiesel pump, Quarters K gas station also offers compressed natural gas and E85, which is 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline.
"Quarters K is the first gas station in the Navy Exchange System to offer all three alternative fuels," said Larry Boone, NEXCOM's automotive program manager. "This project supports Executive Order 13149, 'Greening the Government Through Federal Fleet and Transportation Efficiency.' The purpose of the order is to ensure the Federal government exercises leadership in the reduction of petroleum consumption through improvements in fleet fuel efficiency and the use of alternative fuels. We are excited to be able to do our part to support this important initiative."
NEXCOM took the lead in developing and finding funding for the project, along with Susanne Hammond-Zilberfarb from the Maryland Soybean Board. Through their efforts, $114,000 was received from the U.S. Department of the Army, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of the Interior, National Biodiesel Board, Maryland Soybean Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Nebraska Soybean Board, Iowa Soybean Promotion Board and the Commonwealth of Virginia (Dept. of Mines, Minerals and Energy).
Biodiesel, which is manufactured from vegetable oils, recycled cooking grease or animal fats, burns cleaner and reduces hydrocarbon emissions.
"Any diesel engine can use biodiesel fuel," said Boone. "It doesn't need converting. However, check your car's owners manual or consult your car manufacturer about biodiesel blends when considering the use of biodiesel."
The new biodiesel pump features a "pay-at-the-pump" credit card reader for customer convenience. "The 6,000-gallon storage tank is above ground, so it too is environmentally friendly," said Boone. Quarters K gas station has offered E85 and compressed natural gas for customer purchase since May 2000.
The facility, which is located on the Pentagon Reservation at 801 South Joyce Street in Arlington, Va., is open Monday - Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
