USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (NNS) -- USS Harry S. Truman (HST) (CVN 75) and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 welcomed inspirational speaker Dan Clark aboard Feb. 21.
Clark, along with Air Force Brig. Gen. Allen Peck, addressed Sailors and Marines as part of a Middle East tour speaking with troops on the front lines of the global war on terrorism.
Clark shared his life experiences, including his athletic career in football, his inspirational music and writing, including the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. He also offered his thanks to the crew and reaffirmed the purpose of Truman’s mission, which he reminded the crew is almost accomplished.
“The last time Iraq had an election was 11,000 years ago. In other words, it hasn’t happened,” said Clark. “You’re playing a major part in bringing freedom to the world.”
Clark also stressed the message that each and every individual Sailor and Marine plays an invaluable role in the mission, and that knowing one’s purpose and recognizing one’s personal value are key factors in achieving success, as well as radiating that success among family and friends after returning to homeport.
“God bless each of you for giving up so many things you could be doing at home on dry land,” said Clark. “Each of you Sailors matters - you matter more than anyone else.”
Escorting him throughout the Middle East, Clark’s Air Force entourage has had the opportunity to listen to him speak in various places and share his experiences on the journey, not to mention sharing in the response from the audience.
“We get great turnouts wherever he’s gone,” said Air Force Tech. Sgt. Mark Robinson, aide to Commander, 9th Air Force. “He’s really moved a lot of people.”
"I got a lot out of what he had to say," said Interior Communications Electrician 3rd Class (SW) Matthew Zubrzycki. "He had plenty of interesting stories and good advice."
Clark continues to spread the thanks and goodwill to troops on the front line, and his visit to HST helped brighten spirits as the crew headed back to sea for the last stage of its deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, consisting of USS Barry (DDG 52), USS Mason (DDG 87), USS Monterey (CG 61), USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8), USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) and the aircraft from embarked CVW-3, deployed Oct. 13 for its second deployment in support of the global war on terrorism.
