GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- Capt. Kenneth A. Swan relieved Capt. Donald G. Gerry as commanding officer, Naval Submarine School, in a change of command ceremony at the Historic Ship Nautilus July 15.

Rear Adm. Mark W. Kenny, commander, Submarine Group 2, commander, Submarine Group 10 and commander, Navy Region Northeast, was the principal speaker.

“I think every commanding officer hopes that he can make his command a little bit better than he found it," said Gerry. "And if I’m able to lay claim to that goal," he said, "it is clear to me how it came to be. Put simply, my superb staff.”

Gerry's next assignment is the director for Training, Tactical Development, Doctrine and Knowledge Management, for Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Swan was the school's officer training department director prior to assuming his duties as commanding officer.

In assuming command, Swan said, “A reasonable question would be, what do I plan to do? My plan is simple. It is the Sailor’s Creed, taught to each new naval recruit.”

“As for what I plan to do during my command of Naval Submarine School, I plan to do my best," said Swan.
