NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) Sailors met a few of the stars of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus Feb. 23 at a venue in downtown Norfolk, Va.

With free tickets to the show, Truman Sailors brought friends and family to the event, where they were shown to special seating on the ground floor of Norfolk's Scope Arena.

For one Sailor, this was his first time out and about in the Norfolk area since checking aboard the ship less than two weeks ago.

"[Getting free tickets is] definitely a great benefit," said Culinary Specialist Seaman Matt Woodall. "I'm having a great time."

Sitting only 15 feet away from the performance floor, side-by-side in the third and fourth row of the stadium seating, the Sailors gazed in awe at the amazing acrobats, laughed during the clown Smash Car race, gasped during the equestrian acrobats and applauded the amazing feats of the specially trained cats, dogs and birds in the ring, one of which happened to run off stage in the middle of the show right under the Sailors.

"I liked everything," said Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Radford Chinnery. "The elephants are my favorite, though, because we got a chance to spend time with them earlier."

By the end of the evening, the show proved to be quite an event for the culinary specialists, who had the opportunity to take a break from their own kitchen aboard Truman and spend a great day under the big top.

Harry S. Truman is currently conducting a 10-month Dry-Docked Planned Incremental Availability at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and is expected to return to sea in the fall.
