NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) is offering an opportunity for Sailors stationed aboard Naval Station (NAVSTA) Norfolk to play intramural sports this spring and summer.
These sports include softball, soccer and basketball, and there are no dues to pay.
"MWR picks up the cost of officials and any other costs involved," said Duffy Drum, assistant athletic director for Norfolk's MWR. "Commands would need to pay for any uniforms they might want and any kind of personal equipment and gear."
Commands wanting to play these intramural sports can join even after the season has started.
According to Mike Hillian, assistant athletic director for MWR on the shore side of the base, MWR tries to be flexible to the needs of the different commands.
"All our sports are based on availability. The commands are able to tell us what days and times they want to play," said Hillian. "This enables them to play when they're available, because the ships move in and out so much that it's hard to set a schedule."
There are added benefits to getting involved in sports programs.
"It's a great way for commands to build camaraderie and teamwork," said Hillian. "The teams come out and play together. I think that plays over to their command and their actual working condition."
The Sailors involved are excited about playing.
"I love it," said Aviation Structural Mechanic Airman Steven Fish of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 2, a softball player. "I love this sport."
Shore commands who want to field a team this season can call Mike Hillian at (757) 444-2276 and sea commands can call Duffy Drum at (757) 444-4016.
