NORFOLK (NNS) -- Rear Adm. Daniel P. Holloway relieved Rear Adm. Ray Spicer as commander, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 12 during a change of command ceremony Feb. 23 in the hangar bay aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65).

More than 100 Enterprise crew, family members, friends and honored guests witnessed Holloway assume control of the strike group.

Spicer will continue his Naval career in Washington as the director of the White House Military Office.

In 2006, Spicer led the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group in an extensive deployment, conducting operations in the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, and the Western Pacific within a seven-month span.

During that deployment, Enterprise and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 conducted combat operations simultaneously in Afghanistan and Iraq in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Medusa. From early September through November, Enterprise-based aircraft expended more than 130 precision weapons against Taliban extremists in Afghanistan.

Spicer took the opportunity thank his staff for their service, his leadership for their support, and the crew's families for their encouragement. He commended the crew on their dedication and hard work during the recent deployment.

"Let me say I could not be more proud of all of you," said Spicer. "Your sacrifice and service are not lost on me or on the forces on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan. I appreciate and respect you and I know if you're called into combat again, you'll do your nation proud again. It's been an honor to have served with you."

After assuming command, Holloway thanked Enterprise's crew and the strike group for their professionalism, determination and ability to execute and accomplish the mission.

"As I will expect your continued support and 100 percent effort, you can count on my 100 percent support and effort to you as we work together to accomplish our missions," said Holloway. "I look forward to working with all of you as part of this winning team."

Holloway graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1978. At sea, he served as the damage control assistant and navigator aboard USS Joseph Hewes (FF 1078), engineering officer aboard USS Thorn (DD 988), and commissioning engineering officer aboard USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55). He was the executive officer aboard USS John L. Hall (FFG 32) and commanded USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), and Destroyer Squadron 18. Additionally, he served as the chief staff officer to Commander, Destroyer Squadron 24.

Ashore, Holloway served as the nuclear power officer program manager at Naval Recruiting District, Philadelphia, as an instructor and executive assistant for the Chairman, Seamanship and Navigation Department at the U.S. Naval Academy's Professional Development Division. He also served as the assistant commander assignment officer and the cruiser destroyer placement branch chief at the Navy Military Personnel Command, Joint Staff in the Information Operations Directorate, J39 and as director, Surface Officer Distribution Division (PERS-41) at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tenn.

Holloway earned a master's of science degree in Management Information Systems from George Washington University and a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College.

Carrier Strike Group 12 consists of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Enterprise, the Los Angeles-class attack submarine, USS Philadelphia (SSN 690), the guided-missile destroyers USS James E. Williams (DDG 95), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS Stout (DDG 55) and USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), the fast combat support ship USS Supply (T-AOE 6), and the guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64).
