PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Four Sailors received their gold-fouled anchors during a pinning ceremony held on the flight deck on board USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) Sept. 16.
The new chief petty officers completed the induction training and prepared themselves to become part of the 114-year-old tradition of chief petty officer leadership of the Navy.
"I feel privileged by my selection to Chief," said Chief Boatswain's Mate (SW) Everett Albright. "The transition process made me realize that I have to take a more active role in developing Sailors and helping them do their job better."
During the ceremony, new chief petty officers (CPO) proudly wore the khaki uniform as they were presented, along with the two gold-fouled anchors and the combination cover. The new chiefs then requested permission to enter the CPO mess and rendered a salute to CPO sideboys as each was piped and rung into the CPO mess.
"This is a proud day for our selectees," said Cmdr. Victor Cooper, Pearl Harbor commanding officer. "Today they are donning their khakis as a significant and a very visible recognition and acknowledgment by all of their leadership and professional abilities. Now they have made a commitment not only to the country and Sailors but to themselves."
For the conclusion of that ceremony, the four new chiefs joined the rest of the chiefs on board as they sang "Anchors Aweigh."
"These new chiefs have been welcomed to the CPO mess," said Electronics Technician Chief (SW/AW) Timothy Roberts. "Now they have a responsibility to take all the knowledge and all the lessons that they have learned and give it to Sailors under them."
The list of newly-minted chiefs include: Chief Operations Specialist (SW) Robert Alexander, Chief Machinist's Mate (SW) Scott Carpenter, Chief Boatswain's Mate (SW) Everett Albright and Chief Boatswain's Mate (SW) Michael Mierzwik.
Pearl Harbor is returning to homeport San Diego at the end of September after conducting Partnership of the Americas 2007.
