NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) Sailors were given the opportunity to participate in an Ultimate Frisbee tournament held Sept. 26, on Huntington Hall field in Newport News as part of a Morale, Welfare, and Recreation sponsored departmental challenge.
Teams from Air, Media, Engineering and Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Departments all participated in the regularly scheduled event designed to boost crew morale and promote physical fitness.
"It was definitely worth going out for," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate Equipment 1st Class (AW) David Fredericks, of Carl Vinson’s Engineering Department. “It was fun and I'd definitely do it again."
The three-hour event allowed many to exercise their Frisbee throwing skills, and at the same time gave others the opportunity to participate in the physically demanding activity for the first time.
“This was my first time ever participating in this sport,” said Cryptologic Technician Technical (SW/AW) 1st Class Jason Amiss, who joined sides with the ship’s Engineering Department team. “I had no idea that Ultimate Frisbee was such a physically challenging game! We did physical training regularly and calisthenics in order to keep in shape for the competition.”
Each department competed twice in a double-elimination tournament. Carl Vinson’s media department triumphed in the competition by winning both games.
