SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Commander, Naval Surface Forces (SURFOR) announced the 2007 Battle Effectiveness (Battle "E") winners Feb. 28.
The Battle "E" is awarded annually to ships and crews that present the maximum condition of departmental readiness in their group, and their capability to perform their wartime tasks.
"Congratulations to all award winners. Your success in meeting mission area excellence standards is noted with pleasure," stated Vice Adm. Terrance T. Etnyre, who was then commander, Naval Surface Forces.
Forward Deployed Naval Forces, Japan announced the following winners: USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62), USS Essex (LHD 2) and USS Tortuga (LSD 46).
Hawaii-based award winners included: USS Russell (DDG 59), USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60), USS Chafee (DDG 90), USS Hopper (DDG 70) and USS Lake Erie (CG 70).
San Diego homeported winners included: USS Antietam (CG 54), USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), USS Benfold (DDG 65), USS Tarawa (LHA 1), USS Boxer (LHD 4) and USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).
Mayport, Fla., winners included: USS Gettysburg (CG 67), USS Doyle (FFG 39), USS Underwood (FFG 36) and USS Carney (DDG 64).
Norfolk included the following winners: USS Monterey (CG 61), USS Hue City (CG 66), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS Nitze (DDG 94), USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79), USS Mitscher (FFG 57), USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Wasp (LHD 1) and USS Nassau (LHA 4).
The mine countermeasure ship winner was USS Patriot (MCM 7).
Mine countermeasure crews were Crew Conflict, Crew Exultant and Crew Persistent.
The patrol coastal crews include: Crew Alpha, Crew Charlie and Crew India.
Battle "E" awardees sustained superior performance in the following six excellence categories: Maritime warfare; engineering and survivability; command, control, communications, and information warfare; logistics management; Commander Naval Surface Force Safety Award and the Efficiency Excellence Award.
