1813 - The sloop of war Hornet, commanded by Capt. James Lawrence, encounteres HMS Peacock off British Guyana and easily wins the engagement.
1942 - Task Force 16, commanded by Vice Adm. William F. Halsey Jr., leads the Wake Island Raid in an attempt to destroy the Japanese installations on the island.
1944 - PBY-5As (VP 63) employs Magnetic Anomaly Detection (MAD) gear, bombs German submarine U 761 as she attempts to transit the Straits of Gibraltar.
1945 - USS Lagarto (SS 371) sinks Japanese submarine I 371 and freighter Tatsumomo Maru off Bungo Strait, Kyushu
1959 - USS Galveston (CLG 3) fires the first Talos surface-to-air missile.
