NORFOLK (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead spoke on the importance of diversity in the Navy at the Annual Association of Naval Services Officers (ANSO) Professional Development and Training Symposium, May 1.

At the symposium, the CNO emphasized the need for the Navy to take action to increase diversity today, which will help set the course for tomorrow.

"When the American people look at our Navy they should see themselves reflected back. It ties us more closely to the citizens from whom we come but also ties us more closely to the citizens who we serve," Roughead said.

CNO said diverse organizations have people who bring different perspectives. He believes that diversity will help the Navy to be more effective for the future. He also discussed the role ANSO plays in helping the nation's young people find the Navy.

"As I've engaged the under-represented minorities around the country, I see young men and women with incredible talent and incredible capability that I believe will find tremendous opportunity in the Navy: opportunities for service, for leadership, for achievement, and fulfillment that they won't find anywhere else," Roughead said.

He thanked the organization for their assistance in recruiting and retaining Hispanic officers and enlisted members. He emphasized how their work ties directly into the Navy's readiness.

"I would like to congratulate all of you that have made ANSO possible and for the representation you provide around the country to be able to introduce others to ANSO and what you're able to do," Roughead said. "By getting out and about, by mixing with others, by sharing ideas, you can continue to share with other members of the Hispanic community that which the Navy offers."

ANSO is a professional organization that assists officer recruitment and retention efforts in the Hispanic community; supports and nurtures junior enlisted personnel desiring to apply for officer programs; and fosters the professional growth and development of Hispanic sea services personnel through mentoring, networking, training, and educational programs.
