PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Naval Station (NAVSTA) Pearl Harbor held a command picnic at Rainbow Bay Marina's Rainbow Pavilion May 2 to commemorate the end of the 2008 NAVSTA Pearl Harbor inter-departmental Captain's Cup.
Various events were held at locations in the Pearl Harbor area from April 28 to May 2, including double-elimination softball, dodgeball and volleyball tournaments. The events allowed Sailors to show off their athletic skills and were scored by both participation and performance.
"I think the whole week went extremely well," said Capt. Taylor Skardon, commanding officer of NAVSTA Pearl Harbor. "To end it with a picnic is great because we're a big family here, so it's like going to a large family dinner."
During the final day's events at the picnic, the departments participated in a tug-of-war battle, canoe races, a chili cook-off and a dessert contest. Following the completion of the events, the Captain's Cup trophy was presented to the winning department.
The teams of Brig/Transient Personnel Unit/Admin/First Lieutenant and Personnel Support Detachment (PSD) tied for first with 44 points, and Security came in third with 41 points.
"The turnout at the picnic was above our expectations and I think everyone had a great time here today," said Master-at-Arms 1st Class (SW) Dean Taylor, president of NAVSTA Pearl Harbor Morale, Welfare and Recreation Committee.
Highlights of the picnic included the Security team winning the tug-of-war competition and Skardon's last-minute decision to choose the winner of the competition after a two-way tie for first emerged between Brig/Transient Personnel Unit/Admin/First Lieutenant and PSD.
Skardon, who was not a judge for the food competitions, tasted the desserts of the two departments tied and chose the dessert of the Brig/Transient Personnel Unit/Admin/First Lieutenant, declaring them the winners of the competition.
"It feels great to win the event, and as long as we stick together as a team, we can win it every year," said Yeoman Seaman Recruit Randy Sarran, assigned to NAVSTA Pearl Harbor's Admin Department.
