NMCB 40 has a PAL in the Community

OXNARD, Calif. (NNS) -- Oxnard High School held the 2008 National Police Activities/Athletics League (PAL) Boxing tournament, which kicked off with the presentation of a community service award to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 40 Sept. 29.

The award was presented to NMCB 40's Commander, Cmdr. Glenn W. Hubbard on behalf of PAL for all of the work NMCB 40's Seabees have volunteered over the years.

"Its one of those great things that goes under the radar, so its nice to have our Seabees recognized since this is something that really benefits both our troops and the community," said Hubbard of the award.

PAL is a national organization with over 300 chapters dedicated to helping local communities come together through events and sports, and is sponsored by local police departments.

The award was one of appreciation that was given to NMCB 40 for all of their hard work. This is the first award given from Oxnard's PAL organization to NMCB 40.

"It started with Petty Officer Keith Spencer nine years ago and has just grown; we have so many people from 40 that give their time to this place," said Terrel Harrison, President of California PAL.

"This is the first time we've given anyone from the military an award and we're grateful to have them work with our young people because they're great role models," Harrison added.

The boxing event that took place afterwards had all four services involved. Seaman James Taylor from the All Navy boxing team beat out Marine Cpl. Chris Lawler in the 165 lbs. open division.

"It's exciting to represent the Navy and the perfect place to do it; the PAL keeps kids in line so what better place to do it," said Taylor.

Former professional Heavy Weight Champion of the World, James Toni also showed up for the event and said that kids need these types of programs and that it was great to see the Navy involved with it. Toni is the 1986 Detroit PAL Champion.

By spreading good will and getting involved with PAL, NMCB 40 has shown Oxnard that it's here for the community.
