NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- The All-Navy Boxing Team held tryouts at Rockwell Gym on Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach, Va., Oct. 11-12.
Fifty-two Sailors, including participants from USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), attended the first day to demonstrate their skills in the ring.
After watching six hours of three-minute sparring matches, volunteer judges selected 27 of the competitors to return for the next day's tryouts.
"Gold Eagle" crew member Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) Airman Hector Estrada was one of the Sailors selected. Estrada went all the way to the finals and earned the chance to attend the All-Navy Boxing Training Camp.
Estrada and the other Sailors selected will compete with other winners from Virginia Beach, Va., and San Diego camps for a chance to earn one of eight available spots on the All-Navy team. Those who make the team will then compete in the Armed Forces Championships at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., Feb. 2-9.
The try-outs gave participants an opportunity to see how they compared to other Navy fighters as well as the chance to gain valuable training time. For some, it was their first step toward being part of the All-Navy team.
"Boxing is my life," said Estrada. "I plan to make it my career and continue with the sport beyond my time in the military. I will always do my best and work hard to make it straight to the top."
Winners from the competition get the opportunity to attend the All-Navy Boxing Training Camp at Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme, Calif. Dec. 1 - Feb. 1.
