NEW ORLEANS (NNS) -- The official ground-breaking ceremony for the new commissary and Navy Exchange joint facility on board Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB) New Orleans in Belle Chasse, La., took place Dec. 3.
The new commissary will have 50,000 square feet of space, and the new exchange will have 60,000 square feet. Both stores will be full-service facilities which will include a garden shop and food court in the exchange and a bakery and deli in the commissary.
Currently there is no commissary on the base at Belle Chase although there is a small Navy Exchange.
The commissary that is now operating at the naval support activity (NSA) on the Westbank of New Orleans is on the site where construction will begin next spring for parts of Federal City. Beginning early 2009, the commissary will be sized down and share space with the Navy Exchange at NSA and will only remain open until the new commissary and exchange facility at NAS JRB is complete in August 2010.
The $32-million contract was awarded in September to Caddell Construction Inc. The award was made under the Streamlined Construction Improvement Program (SCIP) by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Contracting Support group for the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) which will administer the contract during construction. Technical support will be provided by DeCA's Facilities Construction and Sustainment Division at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and construction inspection will be provided by Parsons Corp., for both the Navy Exchange and the commissary.
