NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- Machinist's mates aboard aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) have been a driving force behind getting the ship operational during its refueling complex overhaul (RCOH).
With many jobs, tasks, and repairs to complete every day, machinist's mates are working very long hours to provide crew members with amenities that make living on board more comfortable.
"Since the ship has been coming back to life we're getting more and more involved in our rate," said Machinist's Mate 3rd Class (SW) Turquoise Moye, the departmental training petty officer in charge.
Carl Vinson's machinist's mates support many operations. Hydraulics systems are maintained to power elevators that enable the safe and easy transport of supplies and aircraft. They also produce and store liquid oxygen which is used for medical purposes, as well as for breathable oxygen for pilots and tire maintenance.
Additionally, other departments depend on machinist's mates to complete their mission. Heat from the steam that machinist's mates create is vital for culinary specialists to prepare meals for the crew and for the Supply department's washers and dryers.
"You grow to be family, and really care about the people you work with, it means a lot to help out," said Moye.
Many machinist's mates perform around-the-clock maintenance. They answer trouble-call chits, and make emergency repairs to a variety of machinery on the ship. These time-consuming tasks, coupled with other responsibilities make work strenuous.
Duty, standing watch, training after working hours, and conducting drills are also part of a machinist's mates busy schedule.
"We're always working, fixing or updating part of the ship," said Machinist's Mate 3rd Class Dustin Couture.
The lifeline of the ship depends on the hard work of the men and women that make up the machinist's mate community. With their contributions, the "Gold Eagle" will continue to see improvements as the ship completes her RCOH.
