NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- Sixteen Sailors recently joined together and formed USS Carl Vinson's (CVN 70) 2009 softball team.
The co-ed team, coached by Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Kenn Lathers and Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class (SW/AW) John Harris, has been working arduously in the past three weeks to prepare themselves for their first game scheduled May 11, in Yorktown, Va.
"While we are still trying to come up with a team name, we are not wasting time when it comes to our practices," said Lathers, who also serves as the team's captain. "We practice every Monday from 4-5:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. We do a lot of eight-on-eight scrimmaging, batting and infield drills."
Harris, the team's assistant coach, added that the team has also been identifying each others' talents and testing everyone's positions.
"This is a great opportunity for the command to come together and have some great morale outside of work," said Harris. "We have a lot of fun and are excited to see how far our team can go."
The team is comprised of service members from various rates and ranks, E-1 through E-8, ranging from beginners to people who have played in minor league baseball.
"This is great recreation for Sailors to have fun and be a part of a growing team full of people from all types of backgrounds," said Lathers. "I see us being a competitive crew who gets out here and takes it to the top."
USS Carl Vinson is completing its scheduled refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding.
The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.
