SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Global Distance Support Center-Logistics (GDSC-L) was named a Government Customer Support Excellence Award finalist during the 8th annual Government Customer Support Conference held May 4-16 in Alexandria, Va.

Leaders of service desks, contact centers, Web service portals, and other touch points for government's internal and external customers came together at the annual conference to learn, share, and synergize as a community of practice.

Fifty-six agencies, including the IRS Employee Resource Center, Navy Small Arms Weapons Registry and Allowance Branch, Army Information Technology Consolidated Customer Service Center, Navy Logistics One Touch Support, and Commander, Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers (COMFISCS) Logistics Support Centers were nominated for the award in categories such as teamwork excellence, technical excellence, customer focus excellence, and overall excellence in customer support. Three agencies were selected as finalists in each category. The GDSC-L was selected by the GCSC as a finalist for overall excellence in customer support.

GDSC-L is a virtual call center managed by COMFISCS, which responds to customer requests for information, products and services from the logistics system. The call center was recognized for providing supply and logistics support to more than 11,000 customers at 700 military commands and other organizations around the world via phone, fax and e-mail channels.

"As a coordinated virtual workforce environment, the GDSC-L provides continuous support through a 'follow the sun' approach," said GDSC-L Program Manager Deborah McGlennon. "Business rules and processes for support are developed collaboratively with customer groups and key performance indicators are continuously monitored in real time for service quality."

The GDSC provides "one touch" support to customers for supply and logistics, maintenance and technical issues, and manpower, personnel, training and education.

COMFISCS provides an array of integrated global logistics and contracting services to Navy and Joint operational units across all warfare enterprises.

COMFISCS is responsible for facilitating best business practices and efficiencies across the seven FISCs located in San Diego; Norfolk; Jacksonville, Fla.; Yokosuka, Japan; Pearl Harbor; Bremerton (Puget Sound), Wash.; and Sigonella, Italy; and for optimizing the performance of base supply functions and standardizing levels of service across 13 regions and 79 Navy installations.

COMFISCS comprises more than 7,500 military and civilian logistics professionals, operating as a single cohesive team providing global logistics services from nearly 135 locations worldwide.

A component of the Naval Supply Systems Command, headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pa., COMFISCS is part of a worldwide logistics network of more than 25,000 military and civilian personnel providing combat capability through logistics.
