Crane, Ind. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane, a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) assumed engineering agent responsibility for the counter radio-controlled improvised explosive device (IED) electronic warfare 3.1 system this spring.

Engineering agent responsibility means NSWC Crane now has the primary responsibility of implementing CREW 3.1 from systems' development to sustainment.

CREW 3.1 is a dismounted, man-portable system that will provide the warfighter with the latest electronic technology to defeat IEDs, which are the single deadliest threat warfighters face in the U.S. Central command theater of operations. The system is a vital future electronics warfare (EW) protection system.

"Our experts are very excited about this opportunity to increase the IED protection support that we provide to the warfigher," said Mike Foster, NSWC Crane task manager for CREW 3.1 and 3.2 systems.

NAVSEA's Warfare Center Board of Directors initiated the transfer of the technical direction agent (TDA), design agent (DA) and system integration agent (SIA) roles to NSWC Crane, reflecting the warfare center's technical capabilities in EW. NAVSEA serves the warfighter as a single point of contact for resolving technical engineering issues.
