USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (NNS) -- Three Sailors from USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) will compete in the Mixed Martial Arts Modern Gladiators Aug. 14 at the Khedive Shrine Center in Chesapeake, Va.
The competitors, Lt.j.g. Zac MacDonald, Storekeeper 3rd Class Anthony Auguilar and Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 3rd Class (AW) Chris Diaz are a part of the Give 'Em Hell Jui Jitsu Club, which is comprised of eight core members.
"We're putting the warrior back in Sea Warrior, while dispelling some of the rumors and misconceptions about martial arts," said MacDonald, who is a weapons officer aboard Truman and the team's coordinator.
"Martial arts teaches you humility and respect," said MacDonald. "I don't use the word fight; I say competing. They are competing against themselves and building self-confidence. With hard work and technique you can overcome even a larger opponent. The Give 'Em Hell Jui Jitsu Club teaches Sailors that hard work pays off. In Jui Jitsu, as in life, you are the master of your own destiny. If you want to succeed you have to train hard."
MacDonald teaches mixed martial arts to train fighters to bring a variety of techniques and styles and to withstand any type of attack.
"If the samurai loses his sword or the stand-up fighter is forced to the ground, he's going to lose if he doesn't know other forms of defense. That transfers perfectly to what we do on the ship," said MacDonald.
"At a moment's notice as we're out here conducting carrier qualifications, we could be called to respond to another emergency. We have to be flexible and ready to adjust in any situation."
