NEW YORK (NNS) -- Sailors from USS Carney (DDG 64) stood shoulder to shoulder, side-by-side Dutch sailors on the southern tip of Manhattan this morning, featured in an unveiling ceremony of New York City's new visitors' center.
The New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion was funded by the Netherlands, and built on the same spot where the Dutch founded what is now New York City four centuries ago.
Dutch Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife Princess Máxima, sailors from the Dutch Navy, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined the members of USS Carney crew to celebrate the event.
"I thought the symbolism was very moving," said USS Carney Commanding Officer Cmdr. Brendan McLane. "It was great having both countries participate (in the ceremony), and it was nice standing side by side with the Dutch, our NATO allies."
Today's presentation was part of a weeklong series of events to mark the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's arrival to New York City.
USS Carney is now in port in Manhattan, moored at Pier 90 on 47th Street through Saturday. The Arleigh Burke class destroyer is equipped with some of the world's most sophisticated weaponry and will be open to the public for free tours Thursday September 10th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
