MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSO), in conjunction with U.S. Naval War College (NWC) staff, hosted personnel from various U.S. and foreign partner nations during the Maritime Information Sharing Workshop Dec. 8-9.

"NAVSO is delighted to host partner nations, academics, government and non-government representatives in this forum to discuss Maritime Information Sharing," said Capt. Eric A. Taylor, NAVSO Intelligence department head. The "Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower" states simply that "although we can surge when necessary to respond to crises, trust and cooperation cannot be surged." The most fundamental foundation of this trust relies on honest information sharing.

Dr. Derek Reveron, NWC professor, welcomed the participants to the workshop and talked about the importance of information sharing in the U.S. Southern Command region of the Caribbean, Central and South America.

"The nature of today's security challenges requires multilateral solutions enabled through trust, communication, and information sharing," said Reveron. "Navies have a common bond and face similar challenges. By sharing information, navies can more efficiently confront challenges that undermine sovereignty."

NAVSO is the naval component command for U.S. Southern Command and is responsible for all Naval personnel and assets in the area of focus. NAVSO conducts a variety of missions in support of the Maritime Strategy, including Theater Security Cooperation, relationship building, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, community relations, and counter-illicit trafficking operations.
