MIAMI (NNS) -- Dr. N. Benjamin Barnea was sworn-in to the United States Navy Reserve Medical Corps as a captain, June 23, at his Coral Springs, Fla., medical office, by Lt. Sheree Williams, Navy Recruiting District Miami's chief of officer recruiting.

Barnea holds an unprecedented three board certifications in neurology, psychiatry and sleep medicine. A graduate of the University of Rome, Italy, Medical School, Barnea speaks four languages fluently and completed his residency in psychiatry at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

"After years of running a successful practice, I really wanted the chance to give something back to this country. Once you have left it for a while, you realize we aren't perfect but this is the best country to live and serve in," Barnea said. "I also think I may be the only doctor in the Navy to hold three certifications at once."

Because of Barnea's qualifications, vast personal experience and prior service in the United States Air Force, he joins the Navy at the highly prestigious rank of captain.

"It's not very often we get to recruit and commission an officer into becoming a Navy captain, it's quite unusual and requires no less than the Secretary of the Navy's personal approval," said Williams.

I feel that this is quite and amazing accomplishment. If his abilities are that great, then I wish him nothing but the best. Hopefully he will be a positive addition for NavyMed.
