POINT MUGU, Calif (NNS) -- Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) will be presented its second consecutive Platinum Level of Achievement for the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Energy and Water Management Award Oct. 6 at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The 2010 award is based on fiscal year (FY) 2009 accomplishments.

NBVC has already more than doubled the water usage reduction goal for 2016 from 600 million gallons per year to 385 million gallons per year. NBVC also achieved a 17 percent reduction from their FY 2003 energy baseline against a goal of 12 percent. The base also achieved a 36 percent reduction from their FY 2007 water baseline against a goal of 6 percent.

Projects included replacing lighting in a highbay warehouse, gymnasium and hangar with T8 fixtures and spectrally enhanced lamps, along with automated lighting controls.

Water reduction initiatives included new underground irrigation systems and evapo-transpiration (weather-based) controllers that save 52 million gallons of water annually.

NBVC was one of only nine other platinum award winners for Navy and Marine Corps shore activities and ships. NBVC also previously won the SECNAV Energy and Water Management Award for large shore installation for FY 2007.

The SECNAV Energy and Water Management Awards were established to recognize outstanding commitment to energy and water conservation by Navy and Marine Corps activities and ships. Each year, the awards are presented to those activities and ships that have made notable progress toward achieving reduction of energy and water consumption.
